Try to find some meaning

Today I've been emailing back and forth with an office neighbor, a post-college temp paralegal who took the job to see if law school would be a good route. After a year, the answer seems to be a firm "No." He said that he's going to wait until his lease runs out, then leave the U.S. for awhile to do some work that isn't entirely soul-crushing. His email said it like this:

"You know, so when asked what I did today…I could say, 'irrigated a village,' as opposed to 'made another copy set of a binder termed 'Key Documents' for the 5th time in two weeks, because the stupid pompous attorneys could care less to keep track of where they put their shit…'"

And I thought, not for the first time...

Word.

The job gets worse, but the money gets better when you are a lawyer. I'd say more than 1/2 of what I did at a law firm I could've trained my secretary to do...well, not MY secretary. I mean a secretary who's not incompetent.

Ninja, you make lawyering sound so...

Okay, I can't even pretend, "horrific" is what comes to mind. Horrific and soul-crushing. What did I get myself into? I never wanted to be rich, I just want enough to pay my debts and be able to take a low-paying job because it's GREAT.

Sigh.

Heather, I couldn't have echoed my own thoughts better than you stated your own.

I'm beginning to think this whole "lawyer" thing isn't half as great as it was cracked up to be.

It's funny. I am trying sooooo hard to get into the market, to get one of those jobs where I can work 60 hours a week for good money, but then I'll be too busy to do the things I really want to do, like write and have hobbies and develop a well-balanced life. Hmm...

And I keep noticing how magazine articles written by lawyers keep focusing on how they lived the lifestyle for 15 years, then did something entirely outside the grand scheme of things and wound up much happier. Double hmm...

Oh well.

hey, what comment? i haven't disallowed a single comment except for one racist shit some anonymous poster submitted a few months ago. i did get one comment for this blog post today, but every time i tried to publish it, blogger gave me an error. but that person gave a different name - was it you?

don't worry about it. i wrote you how i asked some of my friends on the hill about jobs for you. they said there are a lot of new jobs now - b/c of the new budget / new year. try to ask for informational interviews -- that seems to be the best way to get your foot in the door. most secretaries will tell you there are no openings, but almost every congressman / senator is hiring. just last month my brother got 3 offers for l.a. positions, and he only has a b.a. and one year of work experience.

also, when you talk to someone make sure you express some specialty / work experience in a field that is important to the congressman (i.e. immigration, defense, labor, etc.). this would most likely be from a summer job during law school. they all said this last part was the difference in making hires.

you know, i think the whole moderation thing might be fucked up, plus blogger itself has been up and dwon the last few days. kirk - i never saw your first comment at all, and eve - i DID see yours and have published them "successfully" (so it said) twice now, so...wtf! sorry guys.

kirk - wow! that's really cool of you to look into that and let me know. i'd given up on applying to hill jobs the past month and a half, but i'll pick up the new listing tomorrow and see what i can find. and the advice is appreciated as well - thanks a bunch!

I was just gonna say, don't moderate comments anymore then. I miss the freeflow of your comment scene. Assholes be damned, we can handle them! I've known to be a good bully when need be.
