Delete that shit already

I have a lot of music on my iPod. A LOT. So much music that I haven't even heard much of it yet, even though I listen to my library for at least 8 hours a day at work (I know, I'm going to go deaf, but it's that or go crazy listening to my desk neighbor jabber on the phone in Czech NONSTOP). Yet there's one thing I'm finding undeniably true.

Whenever a song comes on that immediately makes me cringe and think, "Oh my god, what IS this crap??" I will look down at the iPod and it will say - everytime - The New Pornographers.

Hate!

really?? that makes me sad...have you got the latest NP album? give it a shot - i think humans are, like, biologically incapable of not liking "bleeding heart show."

But BHS aside . . . they're too boojy. I said it: boojy.

Full disclosure: that song's on my iPod, too.

The second half of 'bleeding heart' is not bad. If they could have not sung through the first half as well, it would have been a really good song. But one half of one song cannot support their continued existence on my iPod.

also what about the other np albums? mass romantic is so catchy! and i'm sorry, i don't know what's wrong with me, apparently i'm on a np propaganda streak today. i'm just excited for their show here in chicago on friday.

I was hoping to finish uploading all my CDs before culling the sucky songs out. But I kinda feel weird about the idea of deleting songs that I spent time Uploading. I mean if I accidentally uploaded a Bon Jovi song or something, I wouldn't think twice about deleting it, but deleting a song from a band that is otherwise not sucky seems wrong, somehow.

Boojy? Seriously? I thought we were past the age where we had to dislike things when they got popular.

It's straight-ahead pop, well-written and well-executed. Pop is not about authenticity, and consequently it ought to be immune to these silly image concerns. I can understand why listening to Iggy Pop may be problematic now that he's the soundtrack to Carnival Cruiselines. But that's not the continuum on which the NP live.

catherine - I listen to them on random within my whole library, so I have no idea which songs belong to which albums. And don't let me bring you down on NP, it's just my taste - which leads me to:

tom - it's not any kind of social snobbery (for me anyway), and I'll be the first to admit it's likely I have Pretty Bad Taste in music. For me it's a total visceral reaction to them - I just find their voices incredibly grating.

ninja - why? what do you owe them, suffering through the bad? you still bought their album, didn't you? i stand by: delete that shit already.

i didn't mean "boojy" as seriously as it came across to you, tom. i didn't mean to snub you or c; TNP are just a little too clean and straightforward for my tastes, so sure, i find it puzzling that they are as popular as they are.

heather, that's true about their voices - they do get way up in the nasal sometimes. anyway, if you ever have the time or inclination, i suggest listening to "mass romantic" straight through - it's such good summer pop!

yeah, I can understand the voice concerns. carl newman's pretty nasally, and the dude from destroyer (dan something?) is even worse.

But I still think you're all crazy.

HEATHER! I feel the SAME WAY about the New Pornographers! Rolando thinks I am gawddamn outta my mind, but they suck ASS! Oh my god, I am so glad someone is behind me on this one! Rolando is always telling me, "Even people who don't like that genre of music like NP," but SCREW THAT! They blow chunks!

Give Art Brut a try. They are super fun.

Heather, it's probably from my having gone to Catholic school when I was a kid. I wouldn't feel guilty about not uploading a few songs, but once they are there I feel like I should leave them and try to listen to them eventually and give them a chance. It's like in Catholic when the nuns won't let you throw away the rest of that sandwich your mother made, even though you specifically told her that you hate bologna (this is hypothetical, because no one could hate bologna when they are a kid). It's that Catholic stick-to-it-iveness, that character-building through suffering, finishing what you start, and making god cry when you masturbate. You know. Weird catholic hang ups that make no sense to normal people.

It's also why I don't start reading a book until several people recommend it. I HAVE to finish it, no matter how bad it is, once I start. Because you have to finish what you start...or it's a sin. And god hates protestants, because they don't believe in the Pope.
