Wow!

We have a very small family, so this is very exciting. My cousin (who is a month younger than me) had her baby tonight! I'm totally a second cousin! Heh. We were very close growing up, only her, me, and my sister, of our generation, and we often joked how we had to have boys because our family has had only baby girls since the 1940's. And yet, she had a girl! A beautiful baby, I'm sure. Guess I better get busy on that fall trip I was planning.

Dear Heather,

Congratulations!

Your post has brought out the genealogist in me. Your 1st cousin's child is actually your 1st cousin once removed. If you have a child, then your child and your 1st cousin's child would in fact be 2nd cousins. Your 1st cousin's child's child will be your 1st cousin twice removed. Your child's child (and your 1st cousin twice removed) will be 3rd cousins. And...

Uh, sorry. We genealogists can be rather boring once we start talking about the Table of Consanguinity. Which I guess explains why we don't get invited often to the more exciting family parties!

Seriously, again congratulations.
James

Oh thanks James. My mom and I have actually been debating this for awhile...of course, I suppose we could have looked it up! Her email to me on Sunday actually had the subject heading "You're an aunt once removed or whatever!" Heh.
